Deductible vs premium scenario

See the real total cost of a lower premium with a higher deductible versus a higher premium with a lower deductible — works for auto, home or health insurance.

Assumptions this uses
  • Premiums are entered as a flat monthly figure and multiplied by 12 for the annual comparison
  • Each expected claim is assumed to hit the full deductible amount for that option
  • The calculation does not apply any specific state's minimum coverage rules
  • Health, auto and home deductibles all use the same simple formula here, even though real policies structure them differently (for example, a health plan's out-of-pocket maximum is a separate cap this tool does not model)

Limitations: This does not account for how a claim might affect your future premium at renewal, employer contributions on a health plan, percentage-based deductibles that some home policies use for wind or hurricane damage, or any discount tied to your specific deductible choice.

Quote tip

Match the limits before you match the price

Two quotes are only comparable once the coverage limits, deductibles and exclusions line up. If one insurer's number is much lower, check whether they quietly dropped a limit or added an exclusion before assuming it's the better deal. This applies whether you're comparing auto liability limits, home dwelling coverage, a life insurance death benefit, or a health plan's out-of-pocket maximum.

Fee comparison

Compare the true annual cost of two insurance quotes once you add in policy fees, riders or add-ons beyond the headline premium.

Assumptions this uses
  • Monthly fees are multiplied by 12 to reach an annual figure
  • Other annual fees include anything billed once a year — policy fees, endorsement charges, installment fees
  • This treats every fee as fixed and does not model a discount that only applies at certain payment frequencies

Limitations: This does not account for a mid-term rate change, a one-time new-policy discount that won't repeat at renewal, or fees that vary by how you choose to pay (in full versus monthly installments).
